Lanzini to miss World Cup with knee injury

Argentina's West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini has torn his right anterior cruciate ligament during (ACL) Friday's training session and will miss the World Cup, the country's football association has announced.

It won't be Lanzini who supplies it at the World Cup, however, and Sampaoli will now need to examine his back-ups to select a replacement for his injured star.

The 25-year-old had fought his way into the defeated 2014 finalists' World Cup squad since making his debut as a substitute against Brazil in June 2017, Jorge Sampoli's first game in charge.

Lanzini was smiling along with the rest of the team as they took a photo on an evening out in a restaurant as they prepare for Russian Federation.

Icardi finished the 2017/18 season with 29 goals, including a memorable hat trick against city rivals AC Milan and an incredible four goals in a league game against Sampdoria, but was a surprise omission from Jorge Sampaoli's squad to take to Russian Federation this summer. The thrilling playmaker is a fan favourite amongst Hammers supporters, and this most recent season has completed 27 appearances with a return of five goals and seven assists.

Argentina's pre-World Cup plans had already been disrupted after a friendly away to Israel was cancelled, meaning the only match the squad has played together in preparation was a 4-0 win over minnows Haiti.

They will now have to deal with a new player being drafted in after Lanzini's serious injury.
