'Fixer Upper' stars settle with EPA on lead paint violations

The couple's company, Magnolia Homes, has settled with the agency for, among other things, a $40,000 fine. "Magnolia's renovations were depicted on the HGTV series "Fixer Upper" and regularly viewed by well over 3 million households".

The EPA says that proper precautions to avoid lead exposure to workers and residents were not shown on the HGTV show while renovation work was being performed on buildings built before 1978. In one episode, Mr. Gaines discusses testing an old home for lead-based paints and talks about the E.P.A.'s lead renovation, fix and painting rule, known as the R.R.P. rule.

"It's important that consumers and contractors understand that improper home renovation can expose residents and workers to hazardous lead dust", said EPA Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Assistant Administrator Susan Bodine said in a statement. They also agreed to take steps to ensure compliance with lead-based paint regulations in the future and to educate the public about mitigation efforts.

Jackson had previously been linked with Top 14 giants Clermont Auvergne and with Aviva Premiership side Sale Sharks. Jackson has not played since having his contract revoked by Ulster and Ireland in 2016.

The couple's business, Magnolia Homes, has agreed to pay a $40,000 fine after the EPA determined 33 of its home renovations were "conducted without adequate lead paint protections", reports Deadline, which notes the potential fine the company faced was as high as $556,000.

Even small amounts of lead exposure can cause health problems and for kids under six years of age can severely affect mental and physical development. Lead-based paint was banned for use in housing in 1978, and it is likely that houses built before then contain some lead-based paint. Fixer Upper aired its fifth and final season in 2018.
