Doug Ford's Ontario PCs To Form Majority Government

Doug Ford's Ontario PCs To Form Majority Government

"As Mayor, I have focused on building strong relationships and partnerships with all levels of government that have led to historic investments".

The governing Liberals, who ruled the province for the last 15 years, are now struggling to have enough seats to get official party status (a party needs 8 seats for said status), while a small sliver of history was being made out in Guelph, where voters elected the first Green MPP to the Ontario Legislature, the party's leader Mike Schreiner.

They did when TV results showed Wynne on track to win her Don Valley West riding.

"This was not the result I was expecting at all", said Zelma Pixley, a long-time Liberal supporter who expected Mr. Sousa to maintain his seat.

Wynne ended her speech by singing a few notes of the song "I'm still standing". "I know my brother Rob is looking down from heaven".

In some ways, Ford's win echoes the rise of populism in countries such as Poland, Hungary and Italy, said Ian Lee, a professor at Carleton University.

"I don't know why people are angry right now", Tadman added. "And I hope the polls that call for a Conservative majority are wrong".

"Last time the PC was in charge of the province, they absolutely ruined it", he said. Wynne herself held a press conference five days prior to election day to admit she wasn't going to win.

Days before the election, Ford said that he would be ready to govern on day one.

The party is projected to win a majority government, and the call was made within 15 minutes of the polls closing. She beamed that night as she noted the historic nature of her achievement, inviting her partner Jane Rounthwaite to join her on stage.

"I'm here, fishing, going about my day and my life gets interrupted", McConaughey explains of the film's storyline. It's described as a "daringly original, sexy, stylized thriller".

The contest in Canada's industrial and manufacturing heartland was a fight between Ford and the left-leaning New Democratic Party after Liberal leader Kathleen Wynne, premier since 2013 and the first woman to lead the province, dropped to a distant third in opinion polls. "This is a handsome, inclusive place that we live in, Ontario".

Despite her success that night, Wynne was never particularly popular. By 2015, the Liberals had fallen back behind the Progressive Conservatives in polling. And some of Wynne's most dedicated supporters seemed to buy in.

In 2016, Wynne had a major victory when she and her fellow premiers reached a deal with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to expand the Canada Pension Plan, allowing her to check off another of her major election promises. By 2017, the Liberals were faced with a choice.

The Conservatives were also able to tap into voter anger against the then-governing NDP with Harris pledging to cut personal income taxes and government spending.

That was followed three months later by another announcement that had a lot of left-wing voters cheering.

"A new day has dawned in Ontario: a day of opportunity, a day of prosperity and a day of growth".

Ontario PC leader Doug Ford reacts after winning the Ontario Provincial election to become the new premier in Toronto, on Thursday, June 7, 2018. They extended free prescription drug coverage to seniors, promised free daycare for everyone over age two-and-a-half and budgeted for large increases in health care funding.

Scrambling for a new tactic, the Liberals released advertisements with a plaid-clad woman and a rural backdrop admitting that "everything hasn't been flawless in Kathleen Wynne's Ontario".

Horwath consistently polled as the most popular of the three party leaders, so Ford repeatedly slammed her roster of candidates as radical and inexperienced. "But I'm not sorry for keeping business taxes low and attracting Google and Toyota here, or for covering tuition for hundreds of thousands of students so they can get good jobs". We're going to turn this province around.

The Fords amassed a modest fortune through the closely held labeling business started by their father, Deco Labels & Tags Ltd., which Doug has run and expanded into the U.S. While Rob served as mayor until 2014, Doug was at his side and when Rob fell ill - he died from cancer - Doug stepped in to run for mayor, finishing second.

Wynne continued with the "sorry not sorry" campaign at the final election debate but it didn't seem to sway voters. His decision to go first meant that Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne's concession speech wasn't aired on most television networks.
