The findings were published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Experts note that mental illness may have been underreported in the study, either because the person who killed themself had not yet been diagnosed or because those left behind were not aware their loved one's condition.

Researchers also found that more than half of people who died by suicide did not have a known diagnosed mental health condition at the time of death. In the one-year analysis of 27 states, opioids were found in 31 percent of the 3,003 suicides involving drug overdoses.

The report recommends that prevention efforts focus "further upstream" on stresses such as job loss or divorce.
