Canada’s Trump: populist Doug Ford stuns with Ontario election win

And he promises to work to win the support of those who did not vote for him.

Speaking in English and French, Wynne gave a shout out to communities all over Ontario and addressed civil servants, teachers, cleaners, elder care workers, construction workers, transit employees, small tech business owners, restaurateurs, parents of disabled children, First Nations communities, farmers, auto employees, miners, entertainers, musicians, and artists.

NDP candidate Chandra Pasma lead that riding for the majority of the night before the PC Party's Jeremy Roberts edged her and incumbent Bob Chiarelli out by less than 200 votes. Thursday night was absolutely brutal for the Liberals, and much of it constituted a personal rejection of Wynne.

She was gracious in defeat.

The Liberals were poised to win just seven seats, short of the eight needed to maintain official party status to fully participate in the legislature. She inherited a government already rife with billion-dollar scandals, but under her leadership more fuel was added to the fire, such as rising hydro bills and questionable government spending.

However, Horwath had her own challenges when it was revealed that her election platform was improperly costed, several of her candidates had an online history of weird and offensive rants and some of her proposals like a Sanctuary Province would cause administrative and financing headaches.

Ballots will be cast in the 42nd Ontario general election on Thursday as voters elect the next provincial government.

The crowd of Tory supporters at the Toronto Congress Centre erupted into cheers as a Progressive Conservative majority was called.

It's a stunning victory for the party led by Doug Ford, whose campaign was heavy on populist promises but light on fiscal details.

Dominic Thiem ends Cecchinato fairytale to reach French Open final
Earlier this year, del Potro put his relative lack of success on clay down to the fact that he "doesn't like running". Now he will face Thiem - the only player to beat him on clay in the past two years - in Sunday's final.

It's the first time the PCs have ruled Ontario since Mike Harris was re-elected as Premier in 1999.

Just days before the election, however, Renata Ford, the widow of Ford's brother, launched a C$16.5 million lawsuit against him, accusing the politician of being "negligent" as a business manager of the company Deco Labels, which the Ford brothers had inherited from their father.

Ford also pledged to scrap the province's cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, setting up a showdown with Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has vowed to ensure every Canadian province adopts some form of carbon tax.

Elections Ontario premiered new technology to speed up the voting and counting process, and results appeared to flow smoothly.

Andrea Horwath has handily won in her Hamilton-Centre riding, which she has held since 2004.

The NDP leader has consistently polled as the most popular of the three party leaders vying to become the next premier of Ontario.

His campaign drew both praise and criticism.

It really was Doug Ford's race to lose. "Change for the better my friends, is more than a slogan, and my friends, we will not rest, we will not stop fighting until we have it - until we have change for the better".

Questioned by reporters about voters' decision to bring Ford's Conservatives into power, the MPP offered a bit of foreshadowing: "I respect that decision and I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the Official Opposition, and hold this government to account because Lord knows, they're going to need to be held to account".
