Mary Meeker: Google Shifting To Commerce, Amazon To Ads And Search 05/31/2018

As Mary's report notes, the dishwasher took about 80 years to become commonplace in the USA, while the consumer internet has achieved the same in less than a decade. This year, my eye was drawn to slide 246 (of 294).

The theme of the "privacy paradox" surrounding data collection for profit could dominate the internet in 2018 according to Mary Meeker.

Meeker's 294-page 2018 Internet Trends Report shows that although year-over-year growth in the number of internet users slowed by 5 percent from 2016 to 2017, approximately 3.6 billion people are now using the internet. Around 3.6 billion people are internet users. The good news is that US adults are spending more time online, up to about 5.9 hours per day in 2017, compared with 5.6 hours in 2016.

According to the report in Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) the number of internet users in India will reach 500 million by June 2018.

In terms of average selling price of smartphones, Ms Meeker's data shows a decline despite the introduction of the more expensive iPhone X and other high-end Android phones like the new Samsung Galaxy.

Mary takes special note of the impact this disruption could have on the global jobs sector, with on-demand and internet-related jobs expected to dominate in the years to come. In 2015 there were 300 million Wifi networks; past year that number had risen to almost 450 million.

Australia's Fair Work Commission raises minimum wage by 3.5pc
Unions had pushed for a $50 per week rise to the minimum wage, taking it from the current weekly $694.90 to $744.90. The ACTU secretary, Sally McManus, welcomed the decision as a step in the right direction.

Meeker says that when researching product purchases, 49% of shoppers begin with searches on Amazon.com, followed with 36% on search engines.

The installed base of voice-controlled Amazon Echo devices has risen from 20 million in the third quarter of 2017 to more than 30 million in the fourth quarter in the US.

While e-commerce has upended traditional retail, digital sales are still a pretty small piece of the overall pie, but the ratio is rising.

Artificial Intelligence has become a big part of the company spending and internet giants like Google and Amazon will offer more services with respect to it.

Usability improvements to many tech gadgets are based on data, which creates what Ms Meeker called a privacy paradox: internet companies make low-cost services better thanks to user data. Meantime, six technology companies - Amazon, Alphabet, Facebook, Intel, Apple, and Microsoft - were among the top 15 highest spenders for R&D in 2017, reflecting the increasing diversification and competition between tech companies.

Ms Meeker is highly respected and her yearly manifesto on the tech industry has become a much-anticipated annual event at the Recode tech conference.
