Coast Guard: 2 bodies recovered after small plane crashes with 4 aboard

Ben Krupinski, a noted homebuilder on the East End, was killed Saturday after his plane crashed into the ocean off an East Hampton beach.

The cause of the crash has yet to be determined, but O'Hare noted that the plane went down around the same time that thunderstorms entered the area. The other two people remained missing Saturday evening.

The aircraft was about one mile away from the airport when it lost contact with the East Hampton Tower, the East Hampton Police Department said.

Krupinski had built homes for numerous rich and famous denizens of the Hamptons, including Billy Joel, Christie Brinkley, Martha Stewart and several other notable clients. Several agencies joined in the search after a debris field was located about 1.5 south of Indian Wells Beach in Amagansett.

The Piper PA31 Navajo aircraft that crashed into the Atlantic on Saturday afternoon belongs to custom home building giant Ben Krupinski and his wife, Bonnie Bistrian Krupinski, who were both aboard the plane, according to a person close to their families.

"We are stricken by this loss", Capt. Kevin Reed, commander Sector Long Island Sound, said in a Coast Guard statement.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash.

The Coast Guard and local police were assisted by crews from commercial fishing boats in searching for the victims.
