Remnants of Subtropical Storm Alberto could reach Upstate NY this week

Subtropical Storm Alberto - the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season that starts June 1 - prompted Florida, Alabama and MS to launch emergency preparations Saturday.

A storm surge watch is in effect along the USA gulf coast, from Crystal River to the mouth of the Mississippi River. An average hurricane season produces 12 named storms, of which six become hurricanes, including three major hurricanes. Parts of Louisiana and Florida could get 5 inches or more. The hurricane center said a tropical storm warning was in effect from the Suwannee River in Florida to the Mississippi-Alabama state line.

The NHC warned of life-threatening surf conditions, the possibility of a few brief tornadoes in much of Florida and parts of Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.

"This system will bring excessive rainfall to the watch area beginning Saturday evening and continuing through Tuesday evening".

In Gulfport, Mississippi, residents lined up to fill sandbags hoping to block expected floodwaters.

"It's not going to rain all day", Osterberg said. The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast, the NHC said.

"I'm 65 years old and too old to be doing this", he said, laughing.

Along the Gulf Coast and Big Bend, some mandatory and some voluntary evacuations were underway Sunday after a forecast for a 2- to 4-foot storm surge.

The tail of Alberto shifted into the Bahamas last night, so the most intense flow of tropical moisture avoided South Florida Sunday.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for parts of MS and Alabama, meaning the conditions for a full storm are possible in the next 48 hours.

Water vapor imagery and visible satellite imagery over the past six hours shows dry air swirling into the storm.

A tropical storm warning expired for Cuba's western Pinar del Rio province, where heavy rains could trigger flash floods and mudslides, the National Hurricane Centre said.

Hurricane season doesn't formally start until June 1.

After that, it will bring powerful winds and heavy rains as it moves into the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday, it said.

No matter how many times James does this, how many playoff games and series he swings on his own, the wonderment ceases to fade. Jayson Tatum paced the Celtic attack with 24 points as Boston suffered their only loss in 11 playoff home games.
