Detroit Pistons make Dwane Casey primary target in coaching search, report says

Van Gundy, who was Gores' third head coach, was sacked earlier this month. As Wojnarowski reports, the organization is hiring Grizzlies executive Ed Stefanski to "assess the current front office, and oversee the process of hiring a GM and coach".

Detroit is expected to consider San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon for the head coach role, The Detroit News reported. He arrives in Detroit on a three-year deal, and will report directly to Tom Gores. In Toronto, he was part of the front-office collective that hired former Raptors head coach Dwane Casey, who is.

ESPN Senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted that the Pistons' interim General Manager Jeff Bower could be in the running for the full-time gig.

Stefanski also served as executive vice-president of basketball operations for the Raptors from 2011-13 and was general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets. He led the Raptors to a franchise-record 59 wins this past season.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, Stefanski played three seasons on the Penn basketball team, coached by former Pistons head coach Chuck Daly.

The Detroit Pistons fired Stan Van Gundy from his position as both coach and president of basketball operations earlier this offseason, as they look to move in a different direction on the bench and in the front office. The Pistons confirmed the hiring in a release.

While in Memphis, Stefanski helped construct a roster that reached the playoffs in three of his four years there.
