Stacey Abrams Wins Historic Nomination for Georgia Governor

Though your views might evolve over time, there is no getting away from the fact that the mores of the Deep South helped to create the person you are. But today, I am beaming as I stand amid chips of glass from a ceiling that, as a young girl in the 1960s, was so high I couldn't even see it. The Democratic primary victor Stacey Abrams, who ran on a progressive platform, locked down support from seemingly every wing of the party-from Our Revolution to EMILY's List-and given the political climate and the overwhelmingly African-American primary electorate, she was the favorite to win.

History was made May 22 when Stacey Abrams won the Democratic primary election in the state of Georgia.

A number of women battled for and won their Democratic Party mid-term bids in Kentucky, Arkansas and Texas, highlighting the strength of female candidates in the wake of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. Democrats nominated women in two of the districts and a black man in the third.

She penned a piece in Fortune magazine addressing her financial struggles, explaining how her more than $170,000 in student loan and credit card debt and IRS tax payments should not disqualify her as a candidate for Georgia's governor. "And, you know, the lowest in nearly 100 years for the democrats". Abrams' Republican opponent will be determined July 24 during a runoff between current Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp.

The incumbent Republican congressman, Andy Barr, won reelection in the district by 12 percentage points in 2016, but is considered one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the November election.

Ms Abrams was raised in Gulfport, Mississippi, with her five siblings.

Abrams is betting she can succeed by abandoning the political playbook of previous Democratic nominees, who ran centrist campaigns aimed at luring back older white voters who had come to favor Republicans. Coalescing these disenfranchised citizens - who will soon comprise the majority in America - could be the key to victory. Her post-election party rallied supporters and contributed to the new feeling of hope brought about by this historical win.

"It challenges peoples' notions of who can do what, as compared to who has done what". But certainly, not everyone relates. We have an opportunity to vote for a Black woman who is qualified. Abrams benefited from the "linked fate" philosophy among African-Americans that influences them to prefer black candidates because of their interests in advancing their individual and group interests. Forty-six women are running for governor this year, which is much more than the previous record of 34 female gubernatorial candidates in 1994. But Republicans would be smart to find candidates like Scott elsewhere, if their own race-conscious voters can tolerate it. That gives everyone a chance to vote their choice. Another 68 percent of Hispanic or Latino female voters also chose Clinton. Doug Jones' victory against Roy Moore in December.

Abrams has demonstrated a commitment to an array of women's issues. It is an untested strategy, but many eyes will be on Georgia in November as Democrats seek to turn the nation blue.

On the downside, Abrams' 10-year political tenure generated ethics complaints and exposed personal financial debt that could haunt her in the fall campaign. I vote for the best person for the job, whatever party they may be, but many vote the party line. I'm going to run the same way I have run my entire career, and that is with authenticity, and with honesty, but with clear plans for how we can lift up every Georgian.

That is what I like least about my home. In 2016, Hillary Clinton got more votes than Barack Obama ever did in the state.
