Simon Yates looking 'untouchable' according to rival for Giro d'Italia

SIMON YATES has been described as "untouchable" by one of his closest rivals as the Giro d'Italia prepares for its crucial third week. Yates is seeking to become the first British victor in the 109-year history of the race.

Yates set off on a solo attack with 17 kilometers remaining of the 176-kilometer (109-mile) route through the Dolomites from Tolmezzo to Sappada, after another grueling leg which had seen the riders nearly continuously climbing and descending.

"It was really hard from the bottom of the climb".

"They responded the first time, but then I tried again and I gave it everything to get away", Yates added.

Englishman Yates goes into today's 34.2km individual time-trial from Trento to Rovereto with a lead of two minutes and 11 seconds over Tom Dumoulin, the defending champion and world time-trial champion.

"I didn't know that", Yates said.

Mexico said it had sent two civil aviation specialists to help in the investigation. "It's normal for us to rent planes", he said. Global Air had the necessary permits to lease it, and had passed inspections in November a year ago , it said.

Domenico Pozzovivo of Bahrain-Merida remained third, 2:28 behind. "It's super fast and flat, not 100 per cent how I like, but I am happy with any TT", he continued.

Asked if his lead was enough to keep pink after the time trial, he said: "It's a good gap but [Dumoulin] could take two minutes out of me in a time trial".

"The Giro is not decided until Rome, anything can happen", Dumoulin said on the last rest day.

"He's in such great shape that maybe he can also do a really good time trial".

We'll hear from all three, with reaction from Sappada from Yates and Dumoulin and rest day press conference thoughts from Froome. "Even if I have an excellent TT and he doesn't, and I take the lead, it's still going to be very hard. He's riding away from us whenever he wants".
