Kelly Clarkson opened up the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night with a tribute to the eight students and two teachers who died on Friday in the mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas.

Clarkson, who has spoken out before against gun violence, talked about how she was from Texas.

"Why don't we not do a 'moment of silence, ' why don't we do a 'moment of action, '" she suggested. "I'm so sick of 'moment of silence, '" she declared.

"Mamas and daddies should be able to send their kids to school, to church, to movie theaters, to clubs - you should be able to live your life without that kind of fear". Whenever their name was mentioned, or when the camera panned to the band members, the audience erupted - some even holding fan made signs.

Ed Sheeran tied with Kendrick Lamar for the most wins, with six each.

But Swift didn't leave empty-handed: She won top female artist and top selling album for "reputation". As reported by the New York Times, Clarkson later revealed in 2015 more about her position on gun restrictions in an exchange with Amy Schumer on Twitter, during which she said, "As a gun owner I feel like people should have 2 take a gun course & have background checks before they can buy 1".

"Instead of a moment of silence, I want to respect them and honor them with tonight", she said.

Luis Fonsi was passionate when he picked up top Hot 100 song for Despacito, the biggest hit of the previous year, which also included Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber. She gave her first televised performance in nine years.

Then Clarkson introduced Ariana Grande to the stage to perform.

"So thank you so much, you're unbelievable". The Chainsmokers also paid tribute to Avicii when the duo won top dance/electronic artist.

Salt-N-Pepa closed the show with high energy, performing the hits Push It and Whatta Man alongside R&B group En Vogue and even Clarkson.
