Vinson said at a later news conference that the search for a suspect or suspects will continue into the night.

Vinson says officers recovered the suspects' Jeep, found ditched on a road.

Volunteer firefighter Logan Kurek says he ran outside and performed CPR on the officer until paramedics arrived, and says her injuries were consistent with being run over by a auto.

" In 2000, Officer John Stem died of complications relating to a duty gunshot wound he suffered in July 1977".

Baltimore County police said they are seeking at least one armed suspect. Her name has not been released at this time.

At a gas station located at a cordoned-off intersection, some residents gathered to watch three helicopters of TV news crews buzzing overhead, Ab unmarked auto with law enforcers, including one officer cradling a rifle in the back seat, drove past and was waved through by police manning the intersection.

"We're deeply saddened to study of the passing of a Baltimore County Police Officer after she was shot within the line of obligation in the present day", Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan tweeted. The officer, who wasn't immediately identified, was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

A manhunt was underway Monday evening in Baltimore County, Maryland, for four suspects involved in the killing of a police officer, who confronted them after responding to a report of a burglary, authorities said.

"The next thing he heard was a pop, and he saw the Jeep take off and run right over her", said Kurek.

Four hours after the incident, Chief Terrence B. Sheridan said police are awaiting an autopsy to determine the officer's cause and manner of death. The vehicle left skid marks behind, he said, adding the woman was bleeding from her head.

"This tragedy is a solemn reminder of the sacrifice our police and public safety personnel make and are prepared to make to keep us safe each and every day", said Baltimore County Councilman Julian Jones.

Marks also said schools nearby were locked down. "It's just so sad", Amendt said. Belair Road between Ebenezer Road and Chapel Road has been shut down. Drivers were advised to avoid the area.

As a result schools in the area have been told to not dismiss students and residents have been warned to stay inside as a search takes place. At about 6:30 p.m., parents were told to pick up their children, who had been served dinner.
