Nigeria's population will increase by 189m between 2018 - 2050 - United Nations forecast

According to the latest figures released by the UN Economic and Social Affairs Department, Russia's population is expected to fall to 132.7 million people by 2050 - down nearly 10 percent from 2017's population of 146.8 million people.

UN, in a new report titled "2018 Revision of World Urbanisation Prospects", projected that around 2.5 billion more people would be living in cities by 2050.

According to the UN's figures, which are based on the assessments of national statistics agencies, about 144 million people are now living in Russian Federation, with 74.4% (107.2 million) of them being the urban population. While 90 per cent of the world's rural population in 2018 lives in Asia and Africa, the current 3.4 billion global rural population is expected to rise slightly in a few years and then decline to 3.1 billion by 2050. Together, India, China and Nigeria will account for 35% of the projected growth of the world's urban population between 2018 and 2050.

The study predicts New Delhi, India, now second on the most-populated list with 29 million people, will be the world's largest city by 2028. Tokyo, with 37 million people, is now the most populated city, followed by New Delhi with 29 million, Shanghai with 26 million and Mexico City and Sao Paulo, each with around 22 million dwellers.

North America now has the most urbanized regions (with 82 per cent of its population living in urban areas in 2018), while the corresponding figure for Latin America and the Caribbean is 81 per cent, followed by Europe (74 per cent) and Oceania (68 per cent).

A few cities in Japan and the Republic of Korea (for example, Nagasaki and Busan) have experienced population decline between 2000 and 2018.

Two of India's cities are among the world's largest.

Firstly, we had the best chance to go ahead, and secondly, an error from us meant we fell behind", said Garcia. Adil Rami shot wide moments later as Marseille's positive start upset Atletico's rhythm.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that DESA in earlier report said: "By 2050, the third most populous country will be Nigeria, which now ranks seventh, and which is poised to replace the U.S.".

The world is expected to have 43 megacities with more than 10 million inhabitants, mostly in developing regions by 2030. India has the largest rural population (893 million), followed by China (578 million).

Mexico City and São Paulo, come next; each with around 22 million inhabitants.

There will also be more megacities. DESA stresses that sustainable urbanisation is essential to successful development.

It is easier to more efficiently and economically provide infrastructure and services like education and healthcare in urban settings where the population is concentrated compared to rural areas where it is scattered, he said.

At the same time, linkages between urban and rural areas will need to be strengthened, building on their existing economic, social and environmental ties, the report concludes.
