Keep Britain Tidy has today announced the 15 Blue Flag beaches along with 21 Seaside Awards in the south east.

30 years on, Wales now has more Blue Flags per mile than anywhere else in the UK.

In 2015, the Isle of Wight Council stopped applying for Blue Flags because cuts to the way it managed beaches here meant they would not meet the criteria.

Portfolio Holder for Communities and Culture, Coun John Kelly, said: "We're delighted to have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for Roker and Seaburn once again, they help provide a visible reminder to everyone of the cleanliness of our bathing waters and first class facilities along our seafront".

There is also a Blue Flag info-board describing the program and detailing how the Waterfront is meeting Blue Flag standards.

"We're lucky in Wales to have some of the World's finest beaches right here on our doorstep".

"These awards are recognition of their commitment and dedication to keeping our beaches looking their best and making sure they are clean and safe for both residents and visitors alike".

She says that the Blue Flag is peace of mind for travellers. "2018 is Wales' Year of the Sea and with the Volvo Ocean Race coming to Cardiff next month, this is a great time to show our fantastic coastline to the World".

The award represents the internationally recognized gold-standard for water quality, environmental management and education, safety and amenities.

"Year of the Sea 2018 is the ideal time to celebrate the success of the past 30 years of the Blue Flag programme - and gives us a fantastic opportunity to make the most the fact that we have more Blue Flag beaches per mile than anywhere else in Britain".

The City of Barrie Marina is one of nine marinas and 27 beaches in Canada to be Blue Flag certified this year. The status gives local people and visitors the confidence to know that our beaches are well maintained.

It was expected to be done before the start of the current campaign, but it has dragged on with the season now five races old. The poor results by Vettel and Raikkonen dropped Ferrari behind Mercedes at the top of the constructors' championship.
