Apple Considers North Carolina for Second Campus Location

The factors that are drawing Amazon to the Triangle may be similar to what would draw other large technology companies, said Anthony Copeland, North Carolina's secretary of commerce, to The Chronicle in April.

Apple may be closing in on a location for a new campus it announced earlier this year - and it could end up being located close to Duke University, where CEO Tim Cook and several other top Apple executives went to school.

Apple is reportedly exploring Northern Virginia and North Carolina as possible locations for its new campus, which will offer 20,000 jobs. Both Arizona and North Carolina are reportedly being considered by the Cupertino firm and both states are fighting to make sure that they are chosen.

Citing various sources in the legal, real estate, and state government sectors, The Triangle Business Journal reported on Wednesday that the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill - an area referred to also as Triangle Research Park - are now at the top of Apple's short list of potential locations for its upcoming campus development.

Cook was in the region to give a commencement speech at Duke University on May 13. "We do not share information about economic development projects before they are final, but I will be happy to share more information if or when a decision is made", spokesman Jamal Little said in an email. Apple, too, is on the hunt for a new campus that will employ thousands of workers. Where Amazon has been overt with its plans, leading to many public subsidy offers from states, and some protests from local residents, Apple is being far more secretive and has only promised to announce new plans for its future investment in US facilities later this year. In the meantime, the company will begin construction on the new RTP campus, which will sit on up to 300 acres of land.

The driver, Dorothy Bruns, was arrested at her Staten Island home on Thursday, May 3, and has been charged with manslaughter. She was due to deliver a baby girl later this month with her husband, Jonathan Blumenstein, according to media reports.

Apple didn't immediately return a request for comment. Although it has many competitors, Northern Virginia has three separate developmental sites selected as finalists in Amazon's consideration, so it's one of the front-runners.

"We're narrowing the site selection for a new USA campus, and we look forward to sharing more information on that later this year", Cook said on April 29.

The last Apple campus to break ground was its long-in-developmentApple Park.
