In addition, Israeli drones fired gas bombs at the tents of the Return Camp, including medical tents, in Khuza'a town, east of the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis.

The White House blamed Hamas, the militant Palestinian Islamist group that controls Gaza, for the dozens of deaths in Gaza amid protests over the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem on Monday.

At just eight months old, Leila Al Ghandour is believed to be the youngest victim of the worst day of violence in the territory for four years.

On Tuesday, journalists and family members waited for their dead in Gaza's al-Shifa Hospital, as surgeons rushed to treat injured protesters in overflowing operating rooms, while other patients lined the corridors. The vast majority have been killed by live ammunition fired by Israeli snipers but Leila was caught up in a cloud of tear gas, only temporarily painful for adults but potentially more risky for infants.

"We also call on all parties to show restraint and urge all protests to remain peaceful, while calling on all sides to tackle the long-term causes of this conflict and promote dignity and security for both Israelis and Palestinians".

Speaking from there yesterday Colonel Richard Kemp, former commander of United Kingdom forces in Afghanistan, said: "I suspect that the death toll that occurred on Monday will probably deter quite a few people from taking part but there are quite a few massing here already".

North Korea's ambassador to the Conference on Disarmament says his country wants to join global efforts to ban nuclear tests.

Close to the border he eventually found his mother Heyam and handed Leila over to her.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on residents across the occupied West Bank to hold a general strike on Tuesday in honour of those killed in the Gaza Strip.

At first, the baby's parents thought she was merely sleeping.

It was reported that when Leila began crying her uncle took her towards the protest area in order to locate his sister. Monday was one of the deadliest days we have seen since the 2014 war, with six children killed and more than 220 children hurt, including more than 150 who were shot by live ammunition, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza.

"Every country has an obligation to defend its borders", Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. Monday's protests were against the opening of the controversial USA embassy to Israel in Jerusalem, which had angered Palestinians who see the eastern part of the city as their capital.
