ABC Boss Stands by 'Roseanne' Joke Regarding Black and Asian Families

Expect "Roseanne" to cool it on politics and concentrate on family stories when it returns for the second season of its revival next year. The show won acclaim from many Republicans, who heralded it as a break from what they say is the entertainment industry's liberal values. The show's return exceeded all expectations this spring, with the support of Roseanne Barr's character for President Donald Trump attracting attention. An analysis by the entertainment news site Deadline found that the show registered most with viewers in the Heartland, rather than in the urban areas, like NY and Los Angeles.

The rebooted sitcom garnered a huge amount of viewers and controversy in its first seven weeks, with Roseanne Barr's conspiracy theory tweets and one episode's polarizing dig at ABC comedies "Blackish" and "Fresh Off the Boat".

Asked in a teleconference with reporters Tuesday if she thinks more time will be devoted to the siblings' political differences in the future, Dungey replied: "We certainly did touch on some of that in the first episode". Roseanne sarcastically responded, "They're just like us".

Dungey said she was "suprrised at the reaction" to the joke. "We felt writers were looking to tip a hat to those shows".

As far as its next season goes, "I think they'll continue on the path they're on toward the latter part of this season, which is away from politics and more focused on family", she said.

"I do think there's a little bit of that, yes", Dungey said. "Roseanne", she said, is "focusing on a family who is in different economic circumstances than some of our other comedies on the air". We do similar things on our other shows. Some viewers interpreted the joke as a shot at ABC's Black-ish and Fresh off the Boat.

This fall the network will be airing two seasons of Dancing with the Stars simultaneously: the flagship series on Mondays and children's spin-off Dancing with the Stars: Juniors on Sundays.
