4 shot dead in attack on Indonesia police; officer killed

Indonesian police fatally shot four suspected militants Wednesday when they attacked a police headquarters in Riau province.

A van carrying four men drove up to the front gate of the outpost of the city of Riau, and one of the men jumped out of the vehicle and began attacking police with a samurai sword.

Earlier, an internal police report said that one of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body.

Five people died in the attack, including the four suspected militants and a police officer who was hit by the auto.

The spokesman said that a journalist who had been at the police station was also hurt after being hit by the vehicle.

"The one who escaped has been captured and secured at Pekanbaru police station", Wasisto said.

Cox said this has been an ongoing investigation since 2016 and said all of the defendants were not involved with any drug gangs. The fake drugs then made their way to cities including Newark, Phoenix, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Television images showed what was reportedly the bodies of four suspects lying on the ground.

A number of terrorist attacks have occurred in Indonesia in recent days targeting churches and police stations.

Indonesia's elite anti-terror force Densus 88 has responded with a series of raids in which several suspected militants have been shot dead - including the second-ranking member of the local chapter of extremist network Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), believed responsible for the attacks.

The string of attacks comes as Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, welcomes the first day of Ramadan.

In a message carried on its Amaq news agency, Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks in Surabaya.
