1 dead, 2 hurt in Southern California building explosion

Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy says 10 engines and 70 firefighters were dispatched in response to a 1:09 p.m. Tuesday call from Aliso Viejo. The FBI said there was no initial indication of terrorism, but the agency would continue to investigate out of caution.

According to the Orange County Fire Authority, the explosion occurred on the first floor.

Academy on the Hills, a Montessori private preschool located nearby, was sheltering in place.

Bommarito could not provide the status of the three individuals taken to the hospital. Bomb squad investigators were on scene, and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents were en route.

Crews discovered another leak after the explosion, a deputy told KTLA. Tony Bommarito said in an interview on CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS. "We have an explosion, which is not a common thing".

A day care center nearby was unaffected, but working to reunite parents with their children. People were also asked to avoid Oso Parkway and La Paz Road. Authorities initially believed a vehicle had crashed into the side of the structure but later said that was not the case.

Authorities provided no further details.
