Under construction flyover collapses in Varanasi, 12 dead

Speaking on the incident, PM Modi said, "Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to the collapse of an under-construction flyover in Varanasi".

A portion of an under-construction flyover near the railway station here collapsed today killing at least 18 persons while more were feared trapped under the debris, officials said. It is reported that those trapped under the debris are labourers.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from Vijayawada & Visakhapatnam and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams from Kakinada & Visakhapatnam have been deployed for rescue operations in the Godavari boat capsize incident.

"I spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minsiter Adityanath about the situation", Modi said. The Chief Minister has also apprised the Prime Minister about the incident. "He further said." I spoke to UP CM Yogi Adityanath Ji regarding the situation due to the collapse of an under-construction flyover in Varanasi. "Three persons have been pulled out alive from under the debris", he told IANS earlier, adding that three-four people could still be trapped. He also prayed for the quick recovery of the injured.

Most of the people killed were traveling in vehicles, said senior police officer P.V. Ramasastry.

Eye-witnesses alleged that the rescue operation was delayed for about an hour after the incident. Few vehicles which were parked or passing by the under construction flyover came under it.

"I can not state the cause of the incident till an investigation is conducted", Project Manager KR Sudan told ANI. Following the incident, Deputy CM KP Maurya and Minister Neelkanth Tiwari have been directed by CM to go to Varanasi's Cantt area. "We have announced a compensation of Rs five lakh for the kin of the deceased and Rs two lakh for the seriously injured".
