Sporting Lisbon's Dost injured by hooded training ground attackers

A group of around 50 people forced their way into Sporting Lisbon's training centre on Tuesday and assaulted players and staff.

Portuguese media published pictures of Dutch global Dost with cuts on his head and reports said that assistant coaches Mario Monteiro and Raul Jose also suffered injuries.

Reports also said coach Jorge Jesus and a number of other players were attacked, including Portugal internationals Rui Patricio and William Carvalho, and Argentina's Marcos Acuna, Rodrigo Battaglia, all of whom have been named to their countries' preliminary World Cup squads.

Sporting's training center is in Alcochete, about 20 kilometers south of Lisbon.

"Sporting is not this, Sporting can not be this", the club statement added.

The TMC, however, has termed the allegations as "baseless". "Initially, they didn't allow people to file nominations". India´s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party blamed West Bengal´s ruling Trinamool Congress Party for the deadly clashes.

The club confirmed the incident, issuing a statement condemning "acts of vandalism and the attacks on [our] athletes, coaches and professional staff". This is not and can not be Sporting. "We will make every effort to establish full responsibility for what has happened and we will not fail to demand the punishment of those who acted in this absolutely pitiful way".

"Sporting vehemently condemned the events registered today at the Sporting Academy", the club said in a statement.

Sporting Lisbon missed out on Champions League football under agonising circumstances on the last day of the Primeira Liga season.

Last month, club president Bruno de Carvalho threatened to suspend almost the entire first team squad after becoming involved in a public spat with the players over their performance in a Europa League match against Atletico Madrid.
