Overwatch has more than 40 million players

Beginning on May 22nd, a large event will take place to celebrate Overwatch's two year anniversary. Now, though, it looks as if the company has even more reason to commemorate the occasion, as Blizzard recently announced that the game has surpassed more than 40 million players since launch.

A free-to-play weekend for PC, Xbox One and PS4 is also scheduled for May 25th-28th, which will give new players the opportunity to try out the full game, except for Competitive play, before taking the plunge.

In the developer update, Kaplan shared a few more details about the upcoming event, which kicks off on May 22.

It has a mega health pack in the very center, which gets "increasingly risky as the match goes on". He also talks about the first ever free for all deathmatch season which will take place on the Chateaux and Petra maps.

Kaplan then made it clear that players will be able to unlock any item from any previous event with in-game credits or through the new event-specific loot boxes. For example, a Summer Games 2016 legendary skin will cost 1,000 credits while a Summer Games 2017 legendary skin will cost 3,000 credits and so on. Namely, he mentioned that a certain dapper gentleman will be getting a legendary skin that has been widely requested by the community.

The Legendary Edition will be released on May 22nd, the same date as the Anniversary in-game event begins.
