Malaysian former deputy PM Anwar to be released on Wednesday

On Sunday, Anwar said PKR was firmly behind Mahathir's leadership while dissatisfaction heightened over the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman's appointment of three Cabinet positions.

"I will continue to ensure that the current prime minister (Dr Mahathir Mohamad) fulfils the promises for reforms he has made and we will ensure there are proper checks and balances".

"Definitely not as this is what had already been planned", she said when met outside the Cheras Rehabilitation Centre on Tuesday (May 15).

When asked whether Anwar should take over as prime minister, Izzah said she believed the country deserved the best prime minister.

PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (centre) speaks to reporters while leaving the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital in Kuala Lumpur. He reminded the PH government not to appoint Anwar as the prime minister immediately upon his return to Parliament.

He said the transfer of power should take place during the mid-term of the new government.

Daim, who heads the Team of Eminent Persons, said it is not time for an immediate change of premiership.

He said he had met Anwar and told him: "You have all tried your luck many times in the general elections but failed".

Dr Mahathir was sworn in as Prime Minister, making him the world's oldest democratically elected leader.

On Monday, the Comptroller of the Royal Household, Istana Negara, Wan Ahmad Dahlan Ab Aziz, said in a statement that the king, Sultan Muhammad V, had consented to all procedures related to the proceedings of the Pardons Board pertaining to Anwar being finalised on Wednesday.

Anwar, 70, is expected to be released tomorrow.

Mr Anwar began his five-year jail sentence in February 2015 after the Federal Court upheld his guilty verdict on the charge of sodomising his former personal assistant.
