Injured Manuel Neuer named in Germany's 27-man preliminary squad

Germany included injured captain Manuel Neuer in its preliminary World Cup squad and striker Nils Petersen was a surprise call-up.

Neuer, out of action since September due to a foot injury, has been given the chance to prove his fitness, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Bernd Leno and Kevin Trapp his rivals for selection.

The 32-year-old Bayern Munich star is one of four goalkeepers named by head coach Joachim Loew, who will have to cut four names when the final 23-man squad is submitted for the World Cup finals, which start on June 14 in Russian Federation.

Injured Manuel Neuer was named in Germany's extended 27-man pre-World Cup squad on Tuesday, but there was no place for Brazil 2014 victor Mario Goetze.

Neuer, Germany's captain and goalkeeper, has not played since September and still has to prove his fitness ahead of the June 14 start to the World Cup finals in Russian Federation.

Petersen helped his club stay in the Bundesliga with 15 goals in 32 league appearances, eight of those as a substitute.

"This is a big responsibility to continue developing players", the 58-year-old told reporters after German Football Association President Reinhard Grindel said they had agreed to extend their current deal by two more years.

Reus, meanwhile, finally has a chance to play in a World Cup, having returned to form and fitness at Borussia Dortmund since his comeback from injury in February.

Germany will face Mexico, Sweden and South Korea in Group F at next month's World Cup in Russian Federation. Preparations at its training camp in South Tyrol, Italy, begin on May 23.
