Cong leader Shashi Tharoor to stay off Twitter 'for a while'

Delhi Police on Monday filed charges in the death of Sunanda Pushkar and named her widower Shashi Tharoor, a Congress member of Parliament, as one of the accused.

Tharoor has been charged under Sections 306 and 498A of the Indian Penal Code that deal with abetment to suicide and subjecting a woman to cruelty by her husband or his relative respectively, which entail a jail term that may extend up to 10 years.

Congress leader and leader of the opposition in Kerala Ramesh Chennithala on Monday came down on the BJP-led central government over the Delhi police slapping abetment to suicide charge against Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor.

The cause of Pushkar's death was listed as suicide - something Tharoor has long rejected.

Delhi police said they have amassed enough forensic and other evidence to pursue Tharoor in court.

They plan to meet the French and German foreign ministers and European Union high representative Federica Mogherini as well. Foreign Secretary Mr Johnson is due to meet his Iranian counterpart in Brussels for Iran nuclear deal talks.

In a blow to Tharoor, the suave Congress leader is the only person to be arrayed as an accused in the case in which the police have concluded that it was a case of suicide and not murder.

Surjewala dubbed these charges "baseless" and a conspiracy by the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders who "hounded, prosecuted and maligned" Tharoor.

Tharoor questioned the "methods and motivations" of Delhi police, suggesting a political vendetta was at play. He said on Twitter that he has "taken note of this preposterous charge sheet" and that he intends to "contest it vigorously". "If this is conclusion arrived at after 4+ yrs of investigation, (contd.)", he tweeted.

Pushkar was found dead two days after publicly accusing Tharoor, who served as under-secretary-general to Kofi Annan at the United Nations, of having an affair with a Pakistani journalist.
