Chargers Coach Anthony Lynn Graduates From College Almost 30 Years Later

Lynn was six hours short of achieving that goal at Texas Tech in 1992 as an exercise sports science major.

Although he won two Super Bowl rings as a running back before beginning a coaching career that eventually put him in charge of the Los Angeles Chargers last season, Lynn never forgot about missing his college graduation. Now, more than a quarter-century later at age 49, Lynn is a college graduate after earning a bachelor's degree from UNLV in interdisciplinary studies, per ESPN's Eric Williams.

"Football has always been my No. 1 priority, and sometimes that's good, sometimes that's bad". "I chose football over my education then". I did that a few years later when I had the chance to go back.

"I just wanted my papers", Lynn said, via Williams.

Now that he has completed his studies, Lynn said he won't have to receive any more ribbing from his kids. Lynn led the Chargers to a 9-7 record a year ago. Team chaplain Dave Szott told Lynn how he finished his degree 15 years later.

"I was the first person in my family to go to [college], and my mother sat there and watched my son graduate, watched my daughter graduate", Lynn told the LA Times. "Mail me my damn diploma, I'll give it to my mom, and I'm done", Lynn said. I started investigating it in 2014, [and] I didn't do it in 2015 because I was applying to be a head coach.

With his college-graduate children's encouragement, Lynn chose to finish the work over the past 18 months. He did most of his coursework remotely, but also went to UNLV recently for face-to-face discussions with his professors.

Lynn also was motivated by his highly educated children. Lynn's daughter, Danielle, graduated from the University of Oklahoma and will receive her master's in business administration from the University of North Texas next week.

"They were happy", Lynn said. That's how I wanted to go about this. "I never meant to talk about it". "'That's why you didn't graduate'".

It was during that time, though, that Lynn's coaching career was on the rise.
