Call to find 500 new foster families in the East Midlands

Kate Brown proclaimed May to be Foster Care Month in OR, to honor the work of foster parents, child welfare caseworkers and community members who support children in foster care. Could you be a Foster parent?

The charity has put a particular emphasis on the need for families who can foster teenagers and groups of brothers and sisters.

With carers in Wokingham almost full to capacity, the search is on to find 10 more family homes for the growing number of children in care.

The council is also launching of the Mockingbird Family Model, which will see ten families working together to provide respite care, peer support, regular joint planning and training and social activities.

People often think they can't foster because they are single, work or are too old, but none of these things matter. We're looking for people who have space in their home - and their heart - for a young person and can offer them a positive and loving home environment. By becoming a foster carer, people have the opportunity to change a young person's life for good. "How satisfying is that?"

As part of Foster Care Fortnight, Elaine Ellis-Smith, 61, who has been a foster carer in Sunderland for six years with her husband Dave, spoke of her experience.

"With this new additional financial assistance, we would like to encourage more residents to come forward and find out about fostering with us at the council".

Groundbreaking movie about Marvel's first Muslim superhero Ms Marvel in the works
Ms Marvel is also known as Kamala Khan , 16 year old Pakistani-American girl who finds her superpowers at her high school party. Marvel? Whether or not the character will be teased in the upcoming " Captain Marvel " film remains to be seen.

As well as extensive support including one-to-one sessions, out of hours support and a specialist therapeutic programme, carers are also paid for their efforts.

Where can you find the drop-in events?

Cllr Gordon Watson, the council's deputy leader and cabinet member for children and young people's services, who also features in the film, said: "This film shows the fantastic diversity and passion of our fostering community and its supporters". This would be in the foster carers' own home and they would receive an allowance.

Prospective foster carers should ideally be over 25, they can be single, married or co-habiting.

"The best aspect of fostering is seeing the children and young people become happy, confident and comfortable in themselves and their surroundings".

A family is today sharing its story to highlight the need for more foster carers in Sunderland.

According to the Oregon Child Welfare Data, In-Home Safety and Reunification services were created by the Oregon Legislature in June, specifically to address the needs of children and families who come to the attention of child welfare through a report of abuse -- while also designed to maintain children safely in the home and reducing the lengths of stay in foster care and addressing re-abuse of children.
