According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar victor will potentially star alongside Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas, who are both in early talks to join, in the fact-based tale.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Meryl Streep will star in The Laundromat, a drama based on the Panama Papers that Steven Soderbergh will direct. More than 11 million records were leaked about Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, which allowed the wealthy to funnel money illegally in and around the world. Now we have some updates.

Meryl Streep has signed on to lead the movie, and while there are no details on her character, "sources describe it as being the emotional throughline of the movie".

And that's not all. The streaming giant also bought the rights to another book on the Panama Papers with August Osage County director John Wells producing the adaptation. So perhaps it's no surprise that he's considering Netflix as the distributor for an upcoming feature. Deadline reports that Antonio Banderas and recent Oscar victor Gary Oldman are both circling the project.

Netflix previously set a movie on the scandal by German journalists Frederik Obermaier and Bastian Obermayer, who broke the story and wrote the book Panama Papers: Breaking the Story of How the World's Rich and Powerful Hide Their Money.

Ms Caruana Galizia's son, Matthew Caruana Galizia, was part of the Pulitzer-winning team of journalists and data miners that released the Panama Paper revelations.

Just why Netflix would want two dramas about the same subject is a bit of a puzzler, but I'm sure they have their reasons.

Soderbergh most recently released the thriller Unsane, which didn't do well at the box office.
