Colorado girl seriously injured in bear attack outside home

Wildlife officers were hunting a bear in Colorado on Sunday after it attacked a 5-year-old girl.

This is a developing story.

The attack happened early Sunday near Grand Junction, about 386 kilometres west of Denver.

The child was grabbed in or near her own home in Grand Junction around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department said. The mother also says the bear let go of her daughter when she began screaming at the animal.

The woman screamed at the black bear, who then dropped the girl, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The victim is at St. Mary's hospital with serious injuries. The girl had gone outside to investigate noises related to her dog, her mother said.

CPW officers were working with federal wildlife services personnel to track the bear, according to the news release. Local residents may see heavy law enforcement presence throughout the area, including hounds.

As a reminder this time of year, CPW is telling neighbors to secure trash, keep pet food inside and immediately report any bear sightings in this neighborhood, or any residential area.
