UFC 224 Results: Gastelum takes split decision victory over Jacare

Kelvin Gastelum's rise up the middleweight rankings continued at UFC 224, as the heavy handed fighter got by vaunted grappler, "Jacare" Souza.

With Weidman out of action, now may be the flawless time for Gastelum to make a case for a title opportunity.

But he wants to beat Souza in style, despite the Brazilian rebounding from defeat to Whittaker with a first round win over Derek Brunson in January. Here is how the co-main event at UFC 224 played out from start to finish. Souza landed a knee to the body while in the clinch. Souza changed levels to grab a leg. Gastelum landed a number of strikes.

In round two Gastelum would find his range and proceeded to drop Souza with a punch. Unsurprisingly, Gastelum declined to follow, and Souza had to crawl back to his feet.

Souza went for a takedown, but ate a knee. The action was non-stop until the very end, though it was Gastelum who finished on the attack.

A strong right overhand counter from Souza didn't even sting Gastelum and both guys at this point of the round have seen what each guy is capable of as they are standing up.

Gastelum won two straight, and four of five minus a no-contest. He was still moving forward looking to land strikes; Jacare then opted to shoot and got a takedown - only for Kelvin to reverse him! Souza pressed forward and managed to take Gastelum down a couple of times in the last round. A hard left hand connected for Souza. Souza wobbled back to his corner as the bell rung. Gastelum and Souza embrace with a hug at the start of the round. He was throwing punches right back at Jacare and grounded him with a one-two. Souza latched hold and put in an earnest attempt at the finish, though Gastelum battled through and pulled free just before the bell. "I'll do my best and win the fight".
