Jokowi congratulates Mahathir on 'smooth democratic process'

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has congratulated Mahathir Mohamad on the latter's appointment as the prime minister of Malaysia.

Dr Mahathir was sworn in as Malaysia's seventh prime minister on Thursday night, a day after his Pakatan Harapan coalition delivered a shock win at the Malaysia election, ending the six-decade rule by former premier Najib Razak's Barisan Nasional coalition.

On his official Facebook fan page, emeritus senior minister Goh Chok Tong also commented that Mahathir's hard-fought victory brought to mind a memorable quote from Singapore's founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew. "The United States-Malaysia relationship is rooted in longstanding and strong people-to-people ties, shared democratic values, and commercial relations".

"I congratulated the winning of Pekatan Harapan in the 14th general election yesterday", said Jokowi to Mahathir, Thursday, May 10.

He added that he hoped that relations between the two nations would grow further under Mahathir's leadership, and that the 92 year old would continue to enjoy good health for him to carry out his duties with the trust given to him by the Malaysian people. "The US looks forward to continuing to work closely with Malaysia to further strengthen the United States-Malaysia comprehensive partnership, and to address common global and regional challenges", it added. Malaysia is Singapore's nearest neighbour and a vital partner.

Li said he is willing to work with Mahathir to promote the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership to better benefit both countries and their people. "We have had close relations and extensive cooperation with successive Malaysian governments, including the government of Tun Mahathir when he was previously Prime Minister", it said.

Many netizens used the opportunity to offer their wishes as well.
