Governor Dayton catches 3 bass on Fishing Opener

Anglers fish where the Mississippi River meets Lake Bemidji as the sun rises on Saturday morning during Minnesota's fishing opener in Bemidji.

The 2018 Minnesota Governor's Fishing Opener was a success! Their fishing guide was Kelly Morrell of Willmar. All of you here in Spicer, New London and Willmar have been so fabulous. In his last opener as governor, Dayton caught three bass and no walleye.

Dayton's fish weighed in at about 1.5 pounds, 2 pounds and 2.5 pounds. Speaker Daudt and Majority Leader Gazelka also caught two bass each.

The fishing opener is a long-held tradition, typically falling on Mother's Day weekend in Minnesota.

Green Lake had 29 inches of ice just a week or so ago, but thanks to some warm weather the ice finally melted on May 3.

With the late thaw this year, larger lakes such as Mille Lacs may still have some ice, but they are expected to be clear for the most part, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. But temperatures rebounded into the 60s by early afternoon.
