Jury deliberations continue at ex-Assembly speaker's trial

A Manhattan Jury has spoken.

Prosecutors say the 74-year-old Silver earned $4 million illegally in fees for his work on behalf of a cancer researcher and real estate developers who stood to benefit from his clout as one of the three most powerful politicians in NY state government. A federal appeals court vacated the conviction previous year, however, because jury instructions didn't reflect a later Supreme Court decision narrowing the meaning of official acts that can support a federal bribery conviction.

"Sheldon Silver repeatedly used his enormous public power for his own enormous private gain", prosecutor Tatiana R. Martins told the jury Thursday.

Silver, 74, was convicted on charges that included honest services fraud, extortion and money laundering, report the New York Times and Newsday. He was accused of pocketing $4 million from two kickback schemes, one involving a cancer researcher at Columbia University and the other involving real estate developers with business before the state. A sentencing hearing in this trial will take place at July 13.
