"I'm really excited about promoting fashion as an opportunity to all kids across the country, regardless of their background or their gender", Beckham told the Guardian, adding: "That means creating more awareness for boys to get involved with fashion. helping them understand that creative opportunities are available to them too". With nearly 45 million followers on Instagram, business interests all over the world, a fashion designer wife and four children who are almost as famous as their parents, Beckham couldn't be better placed to spread the word about British fashion.

David Beckham has been appointed Britain's "ambassadorial president" to promote its fashion industry, said to be worth a staggering £30 billion and 800,000 jobs to the economy.

The 43-year-old, who has had his fair share of fashion triumphs and disasters, said: "Taking on this new role is an incredibly proud moment for me".

"My role is to support the British Fashion Council, to shine a light on the incredible fashion talent we have here in the United Kingdom, and hopefully open up new exciting opportunities for them in markets like the U.S. and China", Beckham told Vogue exclusively. "I am excited to be working closely with the British Fashion Council to promote and inspire young talent, from across the United Kingdom, on a global scale". He will also support the BFC's education missions, from scholarships to arts education.

Beckham appears to have form in encouraging young men to pursue careers in the industry: his eldest son, Brooklyn, is studying photography at the NY fashion school Parsons. Since giving up professional football in 2013, Beckham has relaunched heritage British menswear label Kent and Curwen, launched his own very successful grooming line, House 99, as well as introduce his own charity, The 7 Fund, and made his own whisky, Haig Club.

His appointment, initially for a two year term, was announced on Friday by the British Fashion Council, whose chairperson, Stephanie Phair, said she was "thrilled" by Beckham's appointment.

During the two-year tenure, the global networking position will see Beckham raise the profile of emerging British fashion talent within investment and media communities, and promote ongoing innovation in the sector.
