Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR revealed with 286bhp

Volkswagen has peeled the covers off its road-racing Golf GTI TCR concept at Worthersee, and it's now been confirmed it's headed for production. While it may be referred to as a concept, expect the final product to be nearly identical to what is seen here. The Golf GTI TCR has a en electronically-limited top speed of 155 miles per hour, but it can be increased to 164 miles per hour by removing the electronic top-speed limiter. Also, it is likely there the TCR will have no production cap - VW will continue to produce it as the top-spec GTI variant - before the vehicle gets replaced by a new-gen model, which is speculated to launch by 2019 end. The major highlight is the powertrain as the concept uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, which is good enough to produce a maximum power output of 290 PS and 370 Nm of peak torque from as low as 1,600 rpm.

"Power still goes through the front wheels, via a seven-speed DSG gearbox, and buyers wanting a more dynamic edge will be able to opt for a sports chassis package that includes adaptive damping and 19-inch alloys (the standard auto will have 18" rims). It sticks to its front-wheel-drive roots unlike the range-topping Golf R. Volkswagen hasn't provided a 0-100 km/h time but the ingredients certainly suggest it will have a standard GTI beat. It will run on 18-inch "Belvedere" forged wheels (19-inch alloy wheels will also be available as an option).

Among the chassis tweaks accompanying the performance upgrade of the new model is a 20mm reduction in ride height, standard 19in wheels and upgraded brakes featuring larger discs and callipers than those in the standard model. The side skirts have new extensions that continue toward the rear of the auto where a new diffuser lives, along with two large exhaust tips. As for the rear, the GTI TCR comes with a diffuser with integrated exhaust tailpipes. Keeping up with current trends, Volkswagen have also fitted the TCR with a projection logo which lights up when the door is opened. The seat centre sections are in the contrasting colour Flash Red, which serves as a bridge to the red contrasting stitching on the sports steering wheel.
