Dodgers to face former phenom Matt Harvey on Friday

There has been some speculation that Harvey could end up making his first appearance out of the bullpen against the Dodgers before returning to a starter role. "I think just pitching is what's important".

"It was some kind of impressive performance, especially with some things happening where he ended up throwing more pitches then we were hoping", interim Reds manager Jim Riggleman said. "Regardless of where you are, it's still pitching and performing". He started the All-Star Game in his home stadium of Citi Field, finished fourth in National League Cy Young Award voting and along the way was hailed as "The Dark Knight", a moniker he embraced.

Tyler Mahle will get the start for the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday at Dodger Stadium, but all eyes will be searching for a different pitcher on the roster. Last year, he was 5-7 with a 6.70 ERA and was sidelined from mid-June until September because of an injury to the scapula in his right shoulder.

"There were a lot of discussions with my family and with Boras Corporation", Harvey said in reference to agent Scott Boras.

"I feel great. I told the Mets that each time I was going out. Obviously, the numbers didn't show that". "I was feeling like I was getting much closer and closer to where I wanted to be on the mound". But he wasn't as effective after undergoing Tommy John surgery following the 2013 season.

The Dodgers (16-21) continue to struggle following their World Series appearance last season.

"There's a lot of good memories, there's a lot of bad memories", Harvey said of his time with the Mets. "After today, I'd like to not talk about my past experiences with the Mets". "Recently, we've got guys on base, had a chance to break a game open, get a little separation, breathing room for our pitchers, and we haven't been able to come through". The Reds, Riggleman said, want to limit Harvey to possibly no more than four innings because he has thrown "a few" extended bullpen sessions since being designated for assignment by the Mets, including one on Tuesday. "There were some pretty negative thoughts going through my head about where my career was".

"There's been a lot of rough times in the last couple of weeks, and actually, in the last couple of years", Harvey said.

The Reds are 2-9 in their last 11 games coming off a win, are 1-8 in their last nine games after allowing two runs or less in their previous game, and are 0-4 in Mahle's last four starts after allowing two runs or less in their previous game. "It's created a lot of mental toughness".

Clearly, the Reds aren't looking at Harvey as any sort of savior to bail out the team or their rotation. "He really was electric with his stuff and he got better as the night went on". When Yasmani Grandal reached on an error by Reds first baseman Joey Votto, Pederson advanced to second. "I wish him well".
